NARRATIVE PROJECT / ROMAN HOLIDAY [revised]
Anna, a sheltered child leading a heavily regimented life,
is on a trip to Rome for a classical piano competition. During a scheduled
playtime indoors, her mother leaves her unattended to tend to some brief
matters. She seizes the chance to look at the gardens outside her window that
piqued her interest, where she meets Sara, a young rascal that she quickly
finds herself at odds with. Sara pretends to be a performer and claims her father is a musician with
plenty of connections. In truth, she belongs to Rome's outcasted Rom community, forced to steal to get by. Sensing Anna's gullible nature, she plans to score some quick cash by finding out where Anna's mother keeps their travel money. She offers to befriend her, promising
connections with her father’s acquaintances. Thinking about her mother's strictness, she accepts.
Sara takes her to places around Rome, pretending to befriend her to gain her trust. After a day of exploring the city and sharing
stories, Sara takes her to see a band playing in a park. They dance and sing to
the music, but the police patrol recognizes Sara as a pickpocket and a thief,
having eluded the police many times before. Anna’s mother and her entourage are
also on the lookout. As they run away, Sara reveals her true nature and her street smarts help them evade both parties. Realizing her adventure will have to end, Anna asks Sara to take her back to the hotel. She returns to her mother.
On their last day, Anna plays on the piano an accompaniment she wrote to the song Sara sung. Sara hears this from the gardens and joins in, and the song becomes their goodbye.
